Q&A

How does Smartslip check that a till slip is valid?

Answered by Smartslip.ai · 3 November 2026

Smartslip.ai reads the photo and looks for the fields the campaign cares about: store name, date, time, and the products or spend on the slip. It compares those fields with the rules the brand set, including which packs qualify and which retailers count. A slip that matches is accepted. A slip that is too old, from the wrong store, or missing the product is rejected, and the shopper is told why.

What is read off the photo

SmartCheck reads the photo and pulls out the fields the promotion cares about. On a till slip those are usually the store, the date, the products, the quantities, and the spend. A Checkers slip and a corner-café slip do not look alike, so the check looks for those fields. It does not expect every retailer to use one template.

What the rules compare those fields with

You set the rules before the first shopper enters. A typical list looks like this.

  • The participating products and pack sizes, so a different brand on the same shelf does not qualify.
  • The retailers that count, or a rule that any store counts.
  • The campaign dates, so a slip from last month is outside the promotion.
  • A minimum spend, if the offer needs one.
  • How many times one slip, or one shopper, can enter.

A slip that matches is accepted. A slip that misses a rule is rejected, and the shopper is told why. In the Wellington’s campaign, 41,106 of 45,636 entries passed. That is about 9 in 10.

When a person looks instead

A faint, dark, or cropped photo is flagged. An unclear image is not treated as a pass. Your team can see the photo next to the details that were read, ask for a clearer photo, and record the decision and the reason. The shopper can also ask for another look.

That check is SmartCheck. How decisions are recorded is covered in the trust centre.
